Monthly active users at its peak in October 2024. It still was not enough.
Character.AI let people create AI characters and talk to them. It was founded in late 2021 by former Google engineers Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, raised $150 million in 2022 at a unicorn valuation, and has taken in more than $193 million in total. In August 2024, Google struck a licensing deal with it reportedly worth $2.7 billion.
On October 13, 2026, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. It is selling assets through a court-supervised process, and Disney has agreed to buy some of them for $20 million, plus a non-exclusive, perpetual license to the technology. The sale is expected to close in late November or early December, and no competing bid has been announced. The company says the platform keeps running during the sale. If no viable bid arrives, it will be shut down.
"Twenty million people a month was not a business. It was a bill."
The numbers explain why. Its first week of app installs in May 2023 topped 1.7 million. By October 2024 it had 20 million monthly users. But heavy use means heavy AI costs, and that put pressure on the company to earn more from the people using it. Later features, including AI video generation, social feeds, interactive storytelling, and microdramas, did not fix the finances. It lists assets and liabilities between $50 million and $100 million.
The company also faced lawsuits and a Texas investigation over child safety. It later settled some of the suits, added safety features, and banned minors from the platform. What happens to the characters people built on it is still unanswered.
This is the lesson ANF wants young builders to take. Attention is not revenue. Before you chase your next thousand users, know what each one costs you to serve and who is paying for it. Growth you cannot fund is a countdown.
For a Detroit builder with a small team and a real budget, that discipline is an advantage. You cannot hide behind a funding round, so you learn the math early. Learn it before the bill teaches it to you.
Millions of people showed up. The business never did.
