Detroit Will Pay Founders $2,000 a Month to Build Here

Detroit decided the best way to keep its young founders is to pay them to stay. The city's Tech Founder Residency Fellowship gives up to eight startup founders a 2,000 dollar monthly stipend for a full year to live in Detroit and build their companies, plus free workspace at TechTown, Bamboo, and Newlab at Michigan Central.

The target is specific and smart. It is built for early-stage, venture-backable founders who graduated from a Michigan college or university after May 2022 and will commit to living in Detroit for twelve straight months. In other words, it is aimed squarely at the young talent that usually gets recruited straight out of school to a coast.

The stipend is the honest hook. Twelve months of covered living expenses removes the exact pressure that pushes a new founder to take a safe job somewhere else instead of building. Pair that with free space inside the city's best startup hubs, and a founder gets a real runway to try before the runway runs out.
