Idea, turned into a downtown Detroit gym
Jordan Smith did not start with a building. He started with an idea, then an online business, then a personal training brand, and now a full service gym in downtown Detroit called Just Elevate Fitness Club. That order matters, because it is the exact opposite of how most people picture a gym getting built. No investor handed him a storefront. He earned the storefront one step at a time.
Just Elevate is now a private training gym in the city core offering personal training, strength classes, group fitness, recovery services, and a community built around results. But the more interesting part of the story is not the equipment. It is the path Smith took to get there, and how much of that path ran straight through Detroit's own support system for founders.

Smith worked his way through a stack of Detroit and Michigan programs on the way up. He came out of TechTown Detroit's Retail Boot Camp as a pitch competition winner. He went through ProsperUs Detroit's entrepreneur training, JPMorgan Chase's Coaching for Impact, and MBBA Capital Connect. He connected with Motor City Match, the Michigan Black Business Alliance, and Black Leaders Detroit along the way. None of those alone builds a gym. Stacked together, they build a founder.
This is the quiet version of Detroit's comeback. The headlines go to the big funds and the flagship developments, and those matter. But the everyday version is a trainer with a phone and a plan who keeps saying yes to the next program, the next pitch, the next small win, until one day the business has an address downtown. That is the version that keeps talent in the city.
Smith has become a multi time pitch competition winner and a speaker who shows up at universities and leadership forums to talk about discipline, branding, and building with purpose. In other words, he is already doing the thing ANF cares most about: turning around and holding the door for whoever is one step behind him.
There are a lot of Jordan Smiths in Detroit right now, still in the online business phase, still in the training phase, still one program away from the storefront. The city that notices them early is the city that gets to keep them. That is the whole game, and Detroit is starting to play it well.
