Companies now building out of Newlab Detroit
Detroit's tech story used to be about who left. It's becoming a story about who's arriving. More than 100 local, national, and global companies now build out of Newlab Detroit, the 270,000 square foot venture hub inside the Michigan Central district in Corktown, and more than 100 apply for residency every year.
What they're building is not abstract. Underwater robots that inspect city water pipes without shutting them off. Reactive heating tiles. Mobility and climate tech. This is hardware and infrastructure, the kind of work that puts Detroit's building heritage to modern use.

The competition to get in is the real headline. When more than 100 companies apply every year for a limited number of spots, it means Detroit has become a place founders choose, not a place they settle for. That is a genuine reversal of the narrative this city carried for a long time.
It matters for the next generation specifically. A young Detroiter with an idea can now see a world-class innovation hub in their own city, full of founders who chose to be here. Proximity changes what feels possible. You build differently when the room exists down the road, not in another state.
For the builders ANF covers, this is the ecosystem filling in around them. The startup fund, the grants, the residencies, and now a hub drawing founders from everywhere. Piece by piece, Detroit is assembling the infrastructure that lets a young builder stay home and still build something serious.
The talent was always here. Now the room is too.
