Detroit Kids Are Learning to Sew, Design, and Run a Business

Sew In Detroit is running a summer camp that treats kids like the founders they could become. Its Young Designers and Entrepreneurs Camp, August 10 through 20, teaches kids ages 8 to 16 to design and sew their own clothes, then runs them through a Young CEO Lab where they learn the business side of what they just made.

That combination is the whole point. Plenty of programs teach a craft. This one pairs the craft with the company, so a kid does not just learn to make a thing, they learn how a maker turns skill into a business. Campers leave with a starter sewing kit, real projects, and a graduation certificate.

It is small and hands-on by design. Registration is capped so every young designer gets personal instruction, which is exactly what makes this kind of program stick. A kid who spends two weeks designing, sewing, and pitching walks away with more than a hobby. They walk away with proof they can create something from nothing.

This is where builders actually start. Not in an accelerator at 25, but at 10, at a sewing table, learning that an idea plus some skill plus a little business sense equals something real. Detroit is planting that lesson early.
