His age when he earned his PhD. At 21 he is building open AI models for medicine.

Tanishq Mathew Abraham was never on a normal timeline. He earned his PhD in biomedical engineering from UC Davis at 19, after years as a child prodigy, and went on to serve as a research director at Stability AI. Most people are starting their careers at the age he finished a doctorate.

He turned that head start into a company. Now 21, Abraham is the CEO of Sophont, a startup building open multimodal foundation models for healthcare, with the stated goal of being the DeepSeek for medical AI, the open alternative in a field dominated by closed, expensive systems. The company raised a 9.2 million dollar seed round to chase it.

He is also building in the open. Alongside Sophont, Abraham runs MedARC, an open research community of more than 2,500 members working on medical AI, betting that the future of health models should be built in public rather than locked inside a few large labs.

"He finished his PhD at 19, then set out to open up AI for all of medicine."

The instinct that stands out is not the early PhD, it is what he chose to do with it. Instead of a safe seat at a big lab, Abraham is building open infrastructure so medical AI is not controlled by a handful of companies. He is using a rare head start to widen the door for everyone else.

This is the near-future founder ANF keeps spotlighting. Use your head start to open doors, not to close them. Abraham is building medical AI in the open.

He finished school at 19. Now he is trying to open up the future of medicine.
