Mia Murray builds her coffee out of memory. The founder of A.M. Brew and Bakery, a mobile coffee and matcha cart, she draws her menu from the iconic Black desserts she grew up loving. When her job shut down with zero placement, she decided it was now or never, and started building for real.
Who are you, and what are you building right now?
"My name is Mia and I'm building something that is quite special to me. I'm the owner of A.M. Brew and Bakery, a mobile coffee and matcha cart. What I adore the most about my business is that my menu is inspired by the iconic Black desserts I grew up loving."
What was the moment you decided to actually go for it?
"In the last year I made small steps toward my goal, but what lit a fire underneath me was my job shutting down. With zero placement for me, I decided it was now or never to truly start my business."

What does Metro Detroit mean to your work?
"Metro Detroit means everything to my work. The culture and community here are what shaped my ideas, and the people make me feel like whatever I want is achievable. There is no other place like Detroit."

What's something people get wrong about what you do?
"Some people think I just throw some espresso in a cup with a little syrup and milk, but no. I put so much more love and care into my drinks than that. I source my ingredients organically, locally, Black owned whenever I'm able to, and ethically. I take from my culture to find the flavor ideas that let me make something unique and delicious."
What's next? What does the near future look like for you?
"I'm just starting off, but I have so many ideas and so many avenues I want to take. First, I want to keep connecting with my community more and really focus on my craftsmanship, bringing my creativity to the forefront. Eventually, I would love to grow my current coffee cart into a brick and mortar."
