100+

Exhibitions, studio tours, product debuts, workshops, and talks across the city over 30 days.

Everybody says there is nothing to do in Detroit. For the next 30 days that is a choice, not a fact. Detroit Month of Design opens today and runs through September 30, and Design Core Detroit's 16th annual festival brings more than 100 exhibitions, open studio tours, product debuts, workshops, and talks across the city. Most of it is free.

The thing outsiders miss is the credential underneath it. Detroit is the only city in the United States that UNESCO recognizes as a City of Design. Not a slogan a chamber of commerce printed on a banner, a designation the city earned and has had to keep earning since 2015. Month of Design is where that title stops being a plaque and starts being a calendar.

"The tourists book the marquee events. The builders walk into an open studio and meet the person doing the work."

This year's theme, Design Moves the Future, is a deliberate turn from theory to practice. The programming is built less around panels about what design could be and more around what Detroit designers are actually making right now. That is a meaningful shift for a festival that could easily coast on lectures. The calendar reads like a to-do list instead of a syllabus.

The names on it are the proof. Tracy Reese, the Detroit-raised designer whose work has been worn by a First Lady, is hosting a sustainable fashion discussion through her Hope for Flowers label on September 19. Asia Hamilton, founder of Norwest Gallery, is on the roster. So is Jonathan Bailey, creative director at Shinola. These are working people opening their doors, not keynote speakers flying in to talk at you.

That open-door format is the part worth planning around. A marquee exhibition is something you watch. An open studio tour is something you walk into, where the person who made the object is standing three feet away and will tell you how, and sometimes what it cost and what it did not sell for. For anyone trying to build a creative career in this city, that access is the whole point, and it does not cost a ticket.

This is the kind of month ANF exists to point at. Not a headline raise, not a ribbon cutting, a full month of Detroit builders showing their work in their own neighborhoods. The opportunity is not abstract. It is a studio a short drive from wherever you are reading this, open to you, this month.
