Of Gen Z homebuyers are buying on their own
The story we keep hearing is that young people will never afford a home. The data is telling a more interesting one. Gen Z just accounted for a record one in five home purchase mortgage locks in the second quarter of 2026, the largest share the generation has ever held, according to ICE's Mortgage Monitor.
It goes deeper than the headline number. Gen Z now makes up nearly a third of all first-time homebuyer loans and more than a quarter of FHA purchase mortgages. Together, Gen Z and millennials account for roughly two-thirds of the entire 2026 purchase market. The younger generations aren't waiting on the sidelines anymore. They're becoming the market.
The most striking part is how many are doing it alone. 53% of Gen Z buyers are purchasing on their own, without a partner's income, more than double the rate millennials did at the same age. Of those going solo, single women are leading by a wide margin, buying at nearly twice the rate of single men.
"Told that ownership was out of reach, a majority are buying the house anyway, by themselves."
None of this is easy money. Affordability is still brutal, and this year a record share of buyers, nearly a third, leaned on help beyond their own savings, whether family gifts, loans, or retirement funds, the highest rate in seven years. Many are delaying other milestones to make the math work. But the instinct is clear: build stability and equity now, rather than wait for permission from a market that never made it simple.
That instinct is the same one behind every young founder and creative we cover. It's ownership. Own the business, own the audience, own the roof over your head. This generation keeps choosing the version of the future that actually belongs to them.
This is the throughline of the people ANF covers. Whether it's a company, a brand, or a first home, the move is the same: stop renting your future and start owning a piece of it. Gen Z is applying that logic to the single biggest purchase there is.
The house is just the newest thing they're building for themselves.
