Unrestricted award to each of four Michigan Central creative fellows
Michigan Central and Newlab Detroit just opened applications for their 2026 Creative Residency, and the offer is the kind young creatives almost never get. Four fellows, each receiving a 30,000 dollar unrestricted award, plus access to fabrication facilities, research, and mentorship, to develop work at the intersection of art and technology.
New this year, the program adds an Art and Health track in partnership with Henry Ford Health. Two of the fellows will be Southeast Michigan residents. The residency runs in twelve-week sessions inside one of the most watched buildings in the city.

Unpack what unrestricted means, because it's the whole point. Most opportunities for young artists come with strings: a brief, a client, a deliverable. An unrestricted award says we trust you to make the work. That trust, paired with a fabrication lab most artists could never afford to access, is rare enough to stop for.
It also says something about where Detroit is placing its bets. A city that funds artists to experiment at the edge of art and technology is a city that expects to produce culture, not just consume it. That is a different posture than the one Detroit was handed for decades.
