Detroit Put Its Young Artists in the Windows

Mint Artists Guild is turning Detroit storefront windows into galleries. Its Art in Windows program puts work by young Detroit creatives on display in the windows of Black-owned and women-owned businesses across the city, turning a walk down the block into a chance to discover a new artist.

Mint is a small nonprofit out of Palmer Park, founded in 2015 by a group of artists, entrepreneurs, and educators who believed the city's young creative talent deserved a real shot at a career. It runs a paid summer jobs program, in partnership with Grow Detroit's Young Talent, that hires teenagers ages 14 to 21 to make art, learn the business of being an artist, and give back to their neighborhoods.

The organization has been at this for years. It has hired dozens of young Detroit artists over the seasons and donated more than 150 original paintings to other nonprofits around the city. Art in Windows is the natural extension of that mission, taking the work out of the studio and putting it where people actually are.

Visibility is the hardest thing for a young creative to get. You can make the work. Getting it seen by people who weren't already looking is a different challenge, one that usually takes connections most teenagers don't have. A storefront window on a busy block solves that directly, and free of charge.

The location is a statement too. This isn't art tucked inside a downtown institution behind an admission price. It's in the neighborhoods, in the windows of local Black-owned and women-owned businesses, tying the young artist, the small business, and the community together in a single frame.

This is the Detroit ANF loves. A city that pays its youngest creatives, puts their work at eye level on their own blocks, and ties it to the small businesses next door is a city betting on its people out loud. That's the soil the builders we cover grow in.
