Jaylin Burnett didn't pick up a camera because it was cool. He picked it up because it was the first thing that let him say exactly what he needed to say. Now he's building a world with his vision and a system with his ethic, one frame at a time.
Who are you, and what are you building?
"My name is Jaylin Burnett. I'm building a world with my vision and a system with my ethic."
"I'm building a world with my vision and a system with my ethic."
What was the moment you decided to go for it?
"I remember this day super vividly. It was when I was in high school and I found something that I can finally express my feelings and vision the way I wanted, which was through a camera."
What does Detroit mean to your work?
"Detroit is one of, if not the most influential cities in the world in my opinion. The history of segregation, art, music, and culture. Detroit is a lowkey artistic environment which always makes me try and think outside the box."
What do people your age get wrong about what you do?
"People my age don't see the art in filmmaking and photography. I feel it's because we grew up in an age where everyone can take video and pictures on a phone just to capture a memory, not to create art."
"Everyone can take a picture. Not everyone can create art."
What does the near future look like for you?
"The end goal is getting awarded a Grammy and being known as a true visionary."
